Obesity surgery can be performed on people with a BMI that is higher than the average individual, i.e. an index of 40 or more. However in case of people suffering from arthritis or diabetes a BMI of 35 can be considered. The goal of the surgery is to decrease the size of your stomach and thereby enabling you to eat only a very limited amount of food at a time. When you are able to eat more or less normally the concentration is going to be on nutrient giving food rather than empty calories. As post operative effects many patients suffer from depression, downs' syndrome, anemia and low blood pressure. But these only be temporary situations as with proper intake of supplements one is able to conquer all these after-effects. The changes in our diet, especially the avoidance of the fatty, sugary diet that kept us on fluctuating glucose level and gave a sense of high by being our emotionally comforting food, are the main causes of these syndromes. Sooner or later one has to adjust to a changing lifestyle and face the fact that there are other ways to cheer up other than through food.

The surgery can be of the following types depending on our physical needs: Restrictive operations (stomach stapling or gastric banding)-- This surgery involves in what is medically termed as "Stomach stapling". In doing so an incision is made in the abdomen which decreases the size of the stomach limiting consumption of food. With the surgery an artificial pouch is settled in right above the main intestine. The size of the pouch is only of an average cup so that you can eat only 120 mL (0.5 cups) to 240 mL (1 cup) of food before feeling uncomfortable. Alternately, Laparoscopic surgeries can be done.
